I am definitely no psychologist, BUT I did think it would be interesting to see why people choose the car colors that they do.

You may think you chose your car simply because you like the color. And while that’s true to some extent, research shows that your choice of color can be a direct reflection of your personality.

It might sound a little far-fetched, and although it’s not a hard and fast rule, there is some science behind this claim! Still not convinced?

Take a look at the characteristics of each of the colors below and see if your car color describes anything about you.

  • White: One of the most popular colors for vehicles is white. This can be a representation of elegance, confidence and keeping things orderly. White is the colour of freshness and purity. There’s an innocent quality to white, a willingness to be transparent. If you choose to drive a white car, you’re open but can be reserved or shy. You appreciate simplicity yet enjoy modern, clean living. You don’t have anything to hide from the world. These are people who generally like things to be very pure and pristine and clear and direct. There’s nothing you can hide under the color white. The woman who chooses a white ride is more likely to keep her car super clean. You can handle a million details and are often asked to take on more than is expected of others. You are often described as an old soul.

  • Gray: Studies show you are neutral about life, often to the point of being indifferent. It is important for you to maintain the status quo - you prefer a safe, secure and balanced existence and never desire much excitement. Gray is also the color of caution and compromise. You’d prefer life to run on an even keel rather than with big ups and downs. Gray doesn’t need (or want) to be as flashy as silver, projecting more dignity, tradition, and maturity. The person who chooses it is usually very practical, very pragmatic. They’re people who make lists and talk things out. New ideas inspire you, but you are wise enough to know which ones are worth following and which ones aren’t. You have a quiet strength that others find appealing. Minding your own business and keeping to yourself is your mantra. Naturally fair and objective, you can put personal opinion and feelings aside and see an issue from all angles.

  • Silver: Silver may be a representation of technology and innovation as many devices (think laptops, smartphones) are also silver and may also represent practicality and responsibility. If you drive a silver vehicle, you’re probably confident yet reserved. Those behind the wheel of a silver whip have several things going for them. “Silver has a rather cool, futuristic connotation, yet with a dash of preciousness,” says Eiseman. “Because anything that’s a true metallic - like silver or gold - there is this perception that it’s worth more. So this is not the kind of person who would be satisfied with gray. They would have to have that metallic finish because they want it to look more prestigious. This is the kind of personality that appreciates elegance with a bit of flash.”

  • Black: This color is popular in luxury cars. It can represent sophistication, power and elegance. You are always in control of your time and life. It’s the ultimate power color. They love elegance and appreciate that which is classic. And they’re usually this way in everything else that they choose. Only close relatives and friends are privy to your true thoughts and feelings.
